When I’m President

Sometime back I got a message from my mom about a teacher who’s class had been discussing the qualifications to become a president in the US.

One of the students took exception to the fact that to be eligible a candidate must be a natural-born citizen.

In one of K.C.’s classes, they were discussing the qualifications to be president of the United States. It was pretty simple – the candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age. However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair was the requirement to be a natural born citizen.

In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming president. KC and the class were just taking it in and letting her rant, but everyone’s jaw hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating, “What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?”

Admittedly, I got this message because I was stubborn enough not to want to come out head first.

However, I replied on how I’d been been amused on how I could be president in both the US and Finland. Which of course led to mom checking it up. Sure enough, I qualify. Of course, I’m not over 35 yet, but I can always give Obama his presidency first ;)

Now wouldn’t that be an interesting first. At least US-Finnish relations should be on a fairly good foundation. For some reason my comment that the White House would at least have some sane dogs in it if I were president was met with derision…

As a US citizen, I’m really looking forward to a time were sanity, sense, and rationality will rule instead of blind faith.

I truly wish that Obama will be able to do even a bit of what needs to be done.

By the way, the title of this post has Extreme’s When I’m President playing in my head. Watch it on YouTube.
